Some photographers seem to think the wild colours and surreal effects often used in HDR photography detract from the image. I don't agree, as a fan of upped saturation anyway I love the colour in these images and the power it gives them.

Having Used FDR Tools Basic...
... I created my first successful HDR image. The result was slightly underwhelming. I had to convert it to JPEG using Easy2Convert software's HDR to Jpg. Here it is:
Picturenauts save files aren't recognised by the rest of my imaging software, shit.
I had a couple of different exposures for the same shot from this morning and put them together and they look amazing but I can't open any of the save files in Paint Shop Pro. I probably need to find a free copy of Photoshop somewhere.
A screen-cap, I want this damned image or at least the ability to print something similar.

Awake again, why did I forget these?
I also ordered a ND400 filter thats as good as 9 stops which should let me take long exposures in bright daylight. I hate how I ordered it yesterday and today when I log on to check the order the site recommended me half a dozen others sellers offering the same item for less. Time to get out the noodles, they're all I'll be eating for a while...

Finally, neutral density lens photos.
Since two rich people getting married in England is apparently important enough to warrant the uni being closed today I figured I would stay up from last night and take some early morning photos in the low light. I'm glad I stayed up and glad I'll probably sleep through the worst of the marriage bullshit today. Work done - check, ignoring pointlessly posh people - check.
Daytime Long Exposure...
...just isn't possible with the two neutral density lenses I have, even combined ND8 and ND4 lenses (which I think is approximate to ND12?) aren't enough for anything more than a 3 second exposure in decent light. I need something like an ND50.
might find one here...
adjustable ND filter, not sure I trust that...

High Dynamic Range
I've been reading Beauty In Decay and about how a lot of the featured photographers use HDR to create better images, keeping the camera still while you change the exposure seems the biggest issue, maybe I just need a more fancy remote. I just gave it a go and realised I probably need something a little more advanced than layers to merge the different photos for this effect. Time for some more research.
I was thinking of starting a Short Story Competition Blog
Something free where people submit short work to an email I create and then I pick stuff I like the most. Nothing fancy but something to give people the chance to show off a bit. It's the sort of thing I've been looking for but haven't found so I might as well start one myself.

Now to watch The Dissapearance of Alice Creed
I should be finishing ccs but I dried up with that at lunchtime. I'll still have referencing to do when I get the word count. Why do we have to reference, it implies a lack of trust. Who cares about research so much, if you were handed a time machine no questions asked would you give a shit how it was developed, maybe but there would be far more important things to ask...
Begins with the creepiest episode of changing rooms ever. Talk about organisation, stress seems to be getting to the younger one. Twisted. I like that everyone is playing everyone else.

Finally I watch Factotum
It's been sitting with the rest of the DVDs for ages so now I'm finally watching it. Based of the book by Charles Bukowski and presumably Bukowski's life as a writer. I like that he bullshits his way through all the interviews. He does what would be the most boring jobs if they kept him for any length of time. The introduction to the other writer in the pickle factory office is ridiculously awkward. "And then I met Janet. I bought her a drink and she gave me her phone number. Three days later I moved into her apartment." I like that instead of stealing a car they just take the cigarettes from it. He sees there was a fire and just goes back to sleep. Janet provokes his violence at the racetrack and seems to enjoy it.She didn't last. The new woman seems obsessed with murder. Why doesn't his mother sit at the table with him and his father? Nice job of getting thrown out of his parents home. And then Janet is back in the picture. "I came home one night and she had moved in with me." I like that he gives her his shoes so she doesn't have to walk in heels. I like his friend from the daily work centre. There's nothing climactic about the end but for some reason it doesn't seem like a bad thing.
Watching La Jetee
The technology used in La Jetee seems more reminiscent of that from Source Code than the time machine in Twelve Monkeys. The climax of the film seems the most obvious lift.
Sans Soleil has the weirdest narrative formula I've seen, it's strange to know so little about the two main characters and so much more about the people they've observed briefly. I really hate the scene of the giraffe being shot, the struggle and the blood are horrific. - It says at the end the scene was taken from Daniele Tessier's Death of a Giraffe.

Into The Wild
I love this film, well shot, well acted and very accurate apparently as a depiction of the life of Christopher McCandless. He abandoned what most would call a bright financial future to go off in search of advaneture heading towards Alaska having been inspired by the likes of Henry David Thoreu and Jack London, he took on a new moniker Alexander Supertramp from the works of W.H Davies book The Autobiography of a Supertramp.
